An initiative developed to support cities to plan their future development and projects in line with the EU 2020 Strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.



Participating small and medium sized cities have the opportunity to fund and/or finance their matured smart projects.



Transforming European cities requires a considerable investment.



Cities need to change and develop, but in times of tight budgets
this change needs to be achieved in a smart way.

EU FUNDING / FINANCE SMART CITY PROJECTS



THE SMART-MED BUSINESS MODEL-1 (SMART-MED BM1)



SMART-MED Commercial Arm is helping participating cities to source funding and/or finance for their mature smart projects.


'The investment community seeks certainty and scale, and most cities, at an individual level, may not be in a position to deliver neither of these'.


The SMART-MED Business Model will create enough value and scale for city administrations, cities, businesses and solution providers by aggregating demand for a small group of cities with identical smart projects and by applying common solutions.



This can be achieved by creating a larger market for broadly usable solutions combining investments from different stakeholders, making cost per implementation more affordable, (aggregated demand), and ensuring a long term perspective

for investments.​


The Business Model is developed by considering also that funding and financing of smart city solutions will be possible, if investments in smart assets are used for lowering the operational expenditure.



TARGET GROUP



Small and medium sized cities





The SMART-MED Business Model targets small and medium sized cities ( < 500,000 population).



TARGET PROJECTS



Eligible smart projects





Participating cities should include mature smart projects that are part of their city strategy, already approved by the city council.​




PRIORITY AREAS FOR SMART-MED Business model-1 (smart-med BM1)



Participating cities may select one or more projects, provided that these are mature projects.

A select team of professionals and experts from member organizations of the
"Smart Cities Mediterranean" Cluster will be engaged in this activity.
